South Africa, birthplace of some of the world’s most famous diamonds
Wide open spaces, bush veld, lions and diamonds – those are the things South Africa is most famous for. It is common knowledge that Africa and in particular South Africa is home to some of the world’s most magnificent diamonds. Possibly the most well known of world famous diamonds is the Cullinan diamond. This diamond is also referred to as the Great Star of Africa or the Star Africa is a magnificent example of the wonder of diamonds. Weighing in at a whopping 530.20 carats this diamond was cut from the immense 3106 carat diamond that was found in the then Transvaal province of South Africa. As like many other famous diamonds that was found in Africa this diamond is now housed in the Tower of London as part of the Crown Jewels.
The Cullinan diamond was cut by Joseph Asscher and Company of Amsterdam. They spent six months examining the stone to decide how best to divide it. This stone produced nine major and 96 smaller brilliant cut stones. When this diamond was discovered, some believe that it was part of a much bigger stone, however, attempts to find the ‘missing half’ have proved fruitless. The last evaluation put the value of this diamond at a bank breaking price of over $400 million.
