Description

A pear cut diamond is a hybrid, teardrop-shaped gemstone that blends the curved top of a round brilliant cut with the tapered point of a marquise cut. • Key Characteristics: • Facets: Typically features 57 to 58 facets designed to maximize brilliance and fire. • Shape: Asymmetrical silhouette with one rounded end and a single sharp tip. • Length-to-Width Ratio: The standard ratio ranges from 1.45 to 1.75 (with 1.50 to 1.60 being the most popular for a classic look). Lower ratios look chubbier, while higher ratios look longer and slimmer. • Face-Up Size: Appears larger per carat than a traditional round diamond due to its elongated shape. • Important Factors to Consider: • The Bow-Tie Effect: A dark, shadow-like bow shape can appear across the centre of the diamond if it is not cut properly. • Symmetry: Critical for a pear cut; both "shoulders" of the rounded end must curve evenly toward the point. • Fragile Tip: The pointed end is prone to chipping and requires a protective setting—such as a V-prong or a bezel—to keep it safe. • Colour Display: Pear cuts tend to show more body colour near the pointed tip, meaning near-colourless or higher colour grades are often preferred. • Orientation: Traditionally worn with the point facing toward the fingertips to elongate the hand, though modern styles sometimes point it toward the wrist. • History: • Invented around 1458 (or 1475) by Flemish gem polisher Lodewyk van Bercken, who created the polishing wheel (scaif) that made symmetrical faceting possible. • Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to mined diamonds, sharing the exact crystal structure and hardness. They are not diamond simulants. When it comes to sparkle, both lab-grown and mined diamonds are comparable, displaying the full range of quality characteristics. • This lab grown diamond has been certified.
